What started off as an ear infection resulted in a terminal diagnosis

Mark ‘Jock’ Jones, a father-of-two from Llantwit Major, was faced with a life-altering diagnosis after what seemed like a routine ear infection. In 2018, Mark began experiencing a series of infections that raised concerns, leading to a referral to the hospital. With a background in nursing, Mark’s wife Bridie suspected something more serious was at play. Her intuition proved correct when Mark was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer that, while treatable, is not curable.

Mark embarked on a 12-month chemotherapy journey followed by a stem cell transplant. This intensive treatment left him feeling severely ill but determined to recover quickly. Mark’s passion for fitness, including running a rugby league academy and surfing, played a significant role in his journey. Even during his hospital stay, Mark engaged in a charity cycle and kept physically active to aid his recovery.

Despite a brief period of remission, the cancer returned four years later, prompting another stem cell transplant and further challenges. Throughout his battle with cancer, Mark has demonstrated resilience and a determination to live life to the fullest. His positive outlook and dedication to physical fitness have not only aided his recovery but also inspired others.

Mark’s journey has been documented in a forthcoming documentary titled “Riptide,” set to premiere this October. The film captures the emotional ups and downs of his battle with cancer, offering a glimpse into the incredible strength and courage he has shown throughout. Mark’s story serves as a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges and highlights the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
