A major railway line in Cardiff is set to close for almost three weeks starting from tomorrow. The Coryton line, a key transportation route in Cardiff, will not be operational from Monday, October 7, to Sunday, October 20. This closure will affect services between Coryton, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Ty Glas, and Heath Low Level.
The railway line closure is necessary for Transport for Wales to undertake essential electrification work. The planned electrification of the line is geared towards introducing new trains on the Coryton line by spring 2025. The decision to completely suspend services for this period allows the work teams, who have been working overnight, to switch to daytime operations and minimise the disturbance to local residents.
During these two weeks, passengers can use their tickets on Cardiff Bus services between the city centre and Coryton. Additional closures are scheduled towards the end of October into early November 2024. Passengers are advised to check the full schedule of closures on the Coryton line online before travelling to avoid any inconvenience.
The Penarth services will also be impacted as they connect onwards from Coryton. From October 9 to October 20, Penarth services will run at reduced frequencies, with buses operating every half hour between Penarth, Cardiff, and Caerphilly. A rail replacement service will be available during peak morning and afternoon periods to accommodate affected passengers.
