An inmate at a troubled Welsh prison has passed away over the weekend. The elderly man, identified as Mr. Malcolm James, aged 85, died at Parc Prison in Bridgend on Saturday. Reports suggest he had been under end-of-life care at the prison. The cause of death will be looked into, as is standard procedure for deaths in custody. A spokeswoman for HMP Parc stated, “As with all deaths in custody, this will be investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, and the cause of death is for the coroner to determine.”
This marks the 15th confirmed death at Parc Prison since late February and comes amid ongoing concerns about the management of the facility by G4S. The prison has been embroiled in controversies including rioting, staff arrests, and allegations of drug-dealing and corruption. Some of the previous deaths have been linked to drugs or self-harm. Last month, four staff members were arrested on suspicion of assault and misconduct in a public office.
In response to the situation at Parc, Labour MP Ruth Jones, chairwoman-elect of the UK Parliament’s Welsh Affairs Committee, expressed her worries describing the issues at the prison as “very concerning.” She pledged that the committee would reopen its inquiry into Welsh prisons.
