A man has been arrested for a late-night assault in Port Talbot town centre, where he asked the police, “Is he dead?” Russell Myles and Shaun Davies were involved in what was described as a “cowardly” assault on a man after a day at the beach. Myles knocked the victim down, and then Davies delivered a punch that caused the victim to lose consciousness. The victim, identified as Craig Mayers, was rushed to a specialist brain injury unit following the assault, which a judge considered could have been fatal.
The assaults took place on the night of July 31 in Port Talbot town centre. Mayers, heavily intoxicated after spending the day at Aberavon beach, encountered Myles on Station Road. The altercation escalated with Myles repeatedly punching Mayers and Davies joining in with a decisive blow. The victim, bleeding heavily and with a mask of blood on his face, was taken to the hospital.
Medical examinations revealed that although Mayers had a low level of consciousness initially, he gradually began to recover. Police investigations led to the arrests of Myles in Swansea and Davies in Port Talbot. Myles, with a history of multiple offences, received a 14-month prison sentence, while Davies was given a suspended nine-month sentence with rehabilitation requirements.
Both defendants appeared in court, where Recorder Greg Bull KC condemned their actions as a “cowardly attack.” Myles’s sentence was to be served with a possibility of release on licence, while Davies was offered a suspended sentence due to certain circumstances presented by his legal representation in court.
