BBC News presenter Clive Myrie has apologised following revelations of failing to declare outside earnings amounting to at least £65,000. The 60-year-old, known for his role as a newsreader and as the presenter of BBC Two’s Mastermind, did not disclose income from corporate events over the past year, as reported by The Sunday Times. Myrie neglected to include 11 engagements in his monthly list of activities, in breach of the BBC’s requirement for on-screen talent to declare external earnings. The corporation’s director-general, Tim Davie, enforced greater transparency in 2021, leading to quarterly publication of such declarations. Among the undisclosed events were Myrie’s role as a debate chairman at GreenTalks Live and a keynote speaker at ING’s Views From The Top dinner.
Both events reportedly paid over £10,000 each. Myrie also omitted nine other engagements, including speaking at the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce’s Prestige Dinner and hosting events for various organisations. The total value of these roles ranged from £5,000 to £10,000. A BBC spokesperson confirmed they had reminded Myrie of his responsibilities and that he had apologised for the oversight. The external events register will be updated with the omitted engagements in the next quarterly publication. Myrie, who reportedly earns between £310,000 and £314,999 at the BBC, according to the latest annual report, has been contacted for comment.
