A GP in Wales has confessed to devising a plot to kill his mother’s long-term partner by posing as a community nurse and poisoning him with a counterfeit Covid booster jab. Thomas Kwan, aged 53, faced trial at Newcastle Crown Court where he initially denied attempted murder. However, he changed his plea after the prosecution outlined the case against him. Initially, police suspected Kwan of using ricin, a deadly chemical weapon, in the attempt on Patrick O’Hara, 72, at his mother’s residence in Newcastle on January 22. An expert later suggested a pesticide was more likely used in the poison.
The GP set off a major emergency response when authorities discovered toxic substances stored in his garage at his home in Ingleby Barwick, Teesside. Kwan had already pleaded guilty to administering a harmful substance, contending that he only intended to cause mild pain. The prosecution argued that his real intention was to kill his mother’s partner of over two decades, who suffered a severe flesh-eating disease as a result of the injection. The court learned that Kwan had acquired an extensive knowledge of poisons and researched methods to commit murder through analysis of his home computers.
During the trial, the prosecution stated that Kwan meticulously planned to disguise himself as a community nurse, visit Mr. O’Hara’s residence, and inject him with a dangerous poison under the guise of administering a Covid booster shot. Kwan falsified NHS documents for the home visit, donned a disguise, used fake number plates for his journey, and booked a hotel under an alias. The strained relationship between Kwan’s mother, Jenny Leung, and her son stemmed from Kwan’s attempt to inherit his mother’s estate by removing Mr. O’Hara as an obstacle.
Despite Mr. O’Hara’s evident trust, Kwan’s scheme unraveled when the victim experienced excruciating pain and later developed necrotising fasciitis, requiring emergency care. Surveillance footage implicated Kwan, who was subsequently identified as the prime suspect. Searches of his home uncovered a stash of lethal chemicals and materials that could be used to produce ricin. The prosecution, maintaining that the motive was financial gain, indicated that Kwan’s sentence will reflect the gravity of the crime.
Mrs. Justice Lambert deferred sentencing pending an evaluation of Kwan’s dangerousness by the Probation Service. She cautioned Kwan of an impending lengthy custodial term, to which Kwan’s representative concurred. The chilling incident highlights the intricate nature of the crime and the alarming lengths to which Kwan had gone in pursuing his malevolent objective.
