A nurse from Nottingham, Lara Eastwood, has been diagnosed with a rare molar pregnancy, where one of her “twins” turned out to be tissue that can develop into cancer. Lara’s journey began when she found out she was pregnant with twins at six weeks, only to be told at eight weeks that she had lost one of them. At 12 weeks, Lara and her fiancé, Daniel Turner, were informed that the dead foetus had not dissolved, indicating a twin molar pregnancy.
Despite being advised to terminate the pregnancy, Lara persisted for a second opinion and was diagnosed with a partial molar pregnancy with a co-existing twin, a condition with only 44 documented cases worldwide. Taking a risk, Lara chose to continue the pregnancy, knowing the tissue from the dead placenta could pose a cancer risk. Now at 36 weeks, she awaits the birth to see if there are any complications for herself or the baby.
Lara, who works as a nurse, relied on her medical knowledge and instinct to make the difficult decision to proceed with the pregnancy. Having suffered previous losses, Lara and Daniel were thrilled to be expecting twins, but the subsequent challenges and uncertainties have made the pregnancy emotionally taxing. Despite the ordeal, Lara remains hopeful for a healthy outcome and aims to raise awareness about this rare pregnancy experience.
