Britons are taking a record number of holidays including to new figures

Britons are taking a record number of holidays, as shown by new figures from a survey commissioned by travel trade organisation Abta. The survey indicates that people in the UK are now taking an average of 3.94 holidays per year. This number marks a significant increase compared to previous years – surpassing last year’s 3.42 and the previous high of 3.91 in 2019. The data suggests that, despite the proportion of people going on holiday remaining the same at 84%, the increase in the number of trips per person is due to some consumers taking multiple holidays annually.

Described as “habitual holidaymakers” by Abta, respondents with families containing at least one child aged under five are taking the most holidays per person per year at an average of 6.49. This includes 3.74 UK holidays and 2.75 foreign trips. Beach destinations remain popular, with 48% of surveyed holidaymakers choosing this type of holiday, while 43% opt for city breaks. The survey also highlights a trend in families with children opting for cruises, with the proportion nearly doubling in the past five years from 8% to 15%.

Interestingly, the survey indicates that holidays are now a priority for consumers, with just 32% stating they are willing to reduce their spending on vacations. This is a lower proportion compared to other spending areas like eating out (58%), leisure activities (43%), clothes, shoes, and accessories (43%), and electronic gadgets (36%). Mark Tanzer, the chief executive of Abta, points out the importance of holidays in providing opportunities for relaxation and quality time with loved ones. He notes a shift from having one summer holiday to multiple trips throughout the year, showcasing the confidence and trust people have in the travel industry to create lasting memories.

The survey, based on responses from 2,000 UK adults, was conducted by The Nursery Research and Planning between July 24 and August 2. The data reflects the evolving holiday habits of the British population, indicating a growing appetite for travel and making the most of opportunities to explore new destinations and create cherished experiences with family and friends.
