A grandmother’s family has paid tribute to her after she was killed in a random attack in her home. June Fox-Roberts, described as a “vibrant lady, extremely hardworking, determined,” lived life to the fullest every day. The tragic incident occurred in Llantwit Fardre, near Pontypridd, when Luke Deeley entered her home in November 2021 and fatally attacked her with an axe. Deeley, a University of South Wales student, was under the care of adult mental health services and later pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The court ordered him to be detained at a high-security hospital due to mental health concerns.
A report recently published highlighted the failings in the care provided to Deeley by various agencies leading up to the attack. The section dedicated to Mrs. Fox-Roberts in the report emphasised her role as a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her family praised her for her love, support, and dedication to them, describing her as resilient, hardworking, and possessing a generous spirit.
Julian Hendry, director of Hundred Families, expressed concern over the unanswered questions raised by the report. He questioned why it took a tragedy for Deeley to receive adequate care and treatment and highlighted systemic failures in managing risks and sharing information among agencies. The family also voiced their frustrations, indicating that if proper care had been provided to Deeley, the tragedy could have been prevented.
In response to the report, Paul Mears, chief executive of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, extended sympathies to Mrs. Fox-Roberts’ family and acknowledged the shortcomings in Deeley’s care. The health board has since implemented recommendations to enhance care standards, including setting up a multidisciplinary team and improving support for carers.
The tragic loss of June Fox-Roberts serves as a reminder of the importance of adequate mental health care and support. The family continues to mourn their beloved relative, who was taken in a senseless act of violence.
