Brits are keen to make green changes to their homes to fight climate change but many are worried that they won’t save enough on bills to be worth the investment, according to a new report. Climate change remains a huge issue for many, with over half (57 per cent) of British homeowners stating that it’s one of the most pressing issues of our time.
However, British Gas unveils its third Net Zero Action Rankings report which reveals this concern comes behind the cost of living, quality of the NHS, the economy, and immigration. While a whopping 80 per cent of Brits are willing to make green upgrades to their home to help do their bit for climate change, the red tape that surrounds how to do it and what help they can get leaves many homeowners stumped, with 56 per cent saying they find the Government’s system of grants and subsidies difficult to understand.
Despite a willingness to explore greener options, the cost of these changes is off-putting for homeowners. The cost of installation is a huge obstacle for many (62 per cent), while a quarter are worried that they won’t save enough on energy bills to make back the investment. Insulation and triple-glazing are the top choices when it comes to green upgrades. This shows most homeowners are keen to explore familiar and affordable options.
But, this year has also seen solar panels grow in popularity with 59 per cent considering them as an important upgrade, which is 16 per cent more than last year. Dan Rosenfield, Managing Director of Centrica New Business and Net Zero, emphasizes the need for simple and affordable solutions along with clear guidelines for homeowners.
