Thousands of drivers in Wales have been fined for breaking the 20mph speed limit law. This marks the first time that GoSafe, the speed monitoring agency, has released data on how many offences have been dealt with. The information covers January and February 2024, showing that of the 12,166 notices issued in January, 4,843 drivers attended a speed awareness course, while 3,258 paid fixed penalty fines. In February, out of 9,995 offences, 4,722 drivers completed a speed awareness course, and 2,542 paid fixed penalties.
The penalties for speeding include a £100 fine and three penalty points on the driving licence. Drivers have a six-month period to resolve these offences. Despite more than 13,500 drivers being caught breaking the 20mph speed limit law recently, this figure has decreased compared to the previous month, with over 15,200 drivers caught. The 20mph speed limit law, implemented by the Welsh government in September 2023, aims to enhance road safety and reduce environmental impact, despite facing criticism.
GoSafe has indicated that in south and mid Wales, 6,840 drivers were caught speeding with an average speed of 28.4mph. Meanwhile, in north Wales, 6,667 drivers were caught with an average speed of 28.6mph. Educational sessions are now being offered to drivers by GoSafe, Welsh Fire and Rescue Services, and other partners as an alternative to fines or penalty points.
Councils are reviewing requests to revert some roads back to their previous speed limits due to public feedback.
