An initiative to support workers affected by the closure of blast furnaces at Tata Steel in Wales has been launched. The Community union announced the establishment of a support centre in Port Talbot, in partnership with the Welsh and UK Governments and local agencies. The union highlighted the significant impact the closure of the blast furnaces and the resulting job losses will have on the local economy and community.
Roy Rickhuss, general secretary of Community, expressed dismay over the closure, stating that a different outcome was hoped for. He emphasized the need to focus on supporting those affected and driving investment for quality jobs in Port Talbot. Secretary of State for Wales and chair of the Tata Transition Board, Jo Stevens, commended the new support hub as a vital resource for affected workers.
The UK Government has allocated £13.5 million via the Transition Board to aid in the transition. The partnership between governments, unions, and the local council aims to provide necessary support to the town. Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Evans acknowledged the necessity of the Community Support Centre and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts towards a better future for those impacted by Tata’s decisions.
