The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has recorded more than 600 cases of the new XEC Covid strain across the globe, with 82 of these identified in the UK. The NHS is urging people to stay home if they spot three signs of this new strain of Coronavirus, known as XEC. This strain, first identified in Germany, has spread to 27 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America due to its high transmissibility from numerous mutations. As Covid cases rise in the UK, data from Public Health Wales shows a rise in hospitalisations with 75 people being admitted to hospitals with Covid in the seven days leading up to September 23 compared to 33 in the seven days prior to August 31.
While self-isolation rules are no longer mandatory in the UK, the NHS recommends staying at home and avoiding contact with others if you have symptoms. According to NHS guidance, individuals can return to normal activities when they feel better or do not have a high temperature. If someone tests positive for Covid, they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with others for a specific period depending on their age and circumstances.
Symptoms of the XEC strain are similar to other Covid strains and can include a high temperature, cough, loss of smell or taste, shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, headaches, sore throat, and more. Booster jabs against Covid will be available until December 20 and will be offered to vulnerable groups including over-65s, individuals with underlying health conditions, care home residents, and frontline health and social-care staff.
In light of the new Covid strain, health authorities recommend caution and vigilance in monitoring symptoms to prevent further spread. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and others during this ongoing health crisis.
