A Cwmbran man has been banned from owning dogs for a decade after being filmed kicking his dog. Jason Self, 43, admitted to an offence under the Animal Welfare Act and faced sentencing at Newport Magistrates’ Court on October 3. The court heard that Self, residing on Belle Vue Road, Cwmbran, was caught on video physically assaulting his male English Bulldog named Bruce. As a result, Self received a 12-month community order, was directed to complete a rehabilitation activity requirement for 10 days, perform 60 hours of unpaid work, and pay a £114 victim surcharge. Additionally, he was prohibited from keeping dogs for 10 years. In court, Self expressed remorse for his actions.
The incident of cruelty came to light after a member of the public filmed Self assaulting Bruce and reported it to the RSPCA. Inspector Simon Evans stated that the assault, which took place in November 2023, involved Bruce being “repeatedly kicked” in the face and body, as recounted by a witness. Following a warrant obtained in December, Bruce was found to have been rehomed since the incident. Inspector Evans later met with Bruce and his new owner, who affirmed that they were content with Bruce’s temperament and thrilled to have him in their home.
A vet who reviewed the video of the incident stated that the dog would have experienced acute pain and ongoing discomfort from the forceful kicks and actions imposed by Self. The vet described the deliberate attempts to cause suffering to the dog. Post-sentencing, Inspector Evans expressed gratitude towards the video provider and noted that Bruce had been successfully rehomed and was now happy. The court records cited that Self expressed regret for his actions during the hearing.
