Three individuals involved in a plot to import millions of pounds worth of cannabis into the UK have been sentenced to prison after a significant drug seizure at a storage facility. The mattresses, which appeared ordinary at first glance, were found to contain a shipment of 334kg of cannabis hidden between bed frames and mattresses. Weiji Chen, aged 29, and John Kinsella, aged 34, had already admitted guilt to charges of importing and supplying cannabis between September 2023 and January 16, 2024. Luke Kinsella, John’s younger brother at 23, confessed to participating in the distribution of the drugs.
At Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, October 8, John Kinsella received a sentence of six years and six months, Luke Kinsella was given four years, and Weijei Chen was handed a seven-year sentence. The drugs had been shipped from Canada to Widnes through Liverpool’s docks in January 2024, where they were delivered to a storage unit, The Storage Team. A substantial quantity of cannabis was concealed within the mattresses in bed frames stored at the facility. The importation was orchestrated by Chen to sell the cannabis at a profit in the UK, while John Kinsella intended to distribute a portion of the drugs. Luke Kinsella assisted in unloading the imported cannabis to further supply it.
Upon the arrival of the lorry carrying the drugs at The Storage Team, Chen directed the vehicle into the car park, where the packages were unloaded before all individuals involved were apprehended by Cheshire police officers. Further details revealed that the importation was a sophisticated operation involving the distribution of high-grade cannabis across the North West region. The successful prosecution was a collaborative effort between the Crown Prosecution Service and Cheshire Constabulary, resulting in the incarceration of the three men for a total of 17 and a half years.
