Incredible journey of smallest baby ever to be born in Wales, kept alive in a sandwich bag

The smallest baby ever to be born in Wales has completed an incredible journey, finally returning home after spending 18 months in hospital. Robyn Chambers made headlines as the tiniest recorded baby born in Wales on March 8, 2023, weighing a mere 11oz. Her mother, Chantelle, delivered her at just 23 weeks gestation following premature rupture of membranes.

Upon her birth, doctors immediately provided care to Robyn, placing her in a “sandwich bag” to maintain her body temperature. Despite facing numerous obstacles in her 19 months of life, Robyn miraculously survived. Recently discharged from the hospital after spending her entire life there, she now resides with her family in Newport.

Robyn’s father, Daniel Chambers, recounted the challenges they faced, describing how her fragile condition made medical interventions complex. Robyn’s hands were smaller than a fingernail upon birth, highlighting the extent of her prematurity.

At home, the family is relishing the opportunity to be together, participating in family outings and cherishing their time with Robyn. Daniel expressed gratitude for being able to bring Robyn home, emphasising the joy of spending time as a complete family unit.

Robyn requires constant care due to severe apnea, a condition causing her to intermittently stop breathing. Despite being diagnosed with several health issues, including hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and severe apnea, Robyn’s parents remain dedicated to her well-being.

Documenting Robyn’s journey on an Instagram page, Daniel aims to raise awareness and support other families experiencing similar challenges. The family has also set up a fundraising page to cover necessary equipment and therapies for Robyn’s care.

Reflecting on Robyn’s progress, Daniel expressed relief at being home, where they have more freedom and can enjoy everyday activities like visiting a local park. The Chambers family’s story serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing Robyn’s resilience and the unwavering love and dedication of her parents.
