A man in Wales attempted to receive shipments of cannabis from the US by disguising the drugs as Yankee candles. Anthony Chadwick, 62, was the recipient of the intercepted packages, which were discovered by a customs official in Slough, Berkshire, on May 31 last year. The parcels, labelled as Yankee candles, were found to contain 127g of cannabis. In total, five packages containing 815g of cannabis with an estimated value of £5,800 were intercepted.
At a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Chadwick was involved in the supply of cannabis between May and June 2023. When police searched his home in Merthyr Tydfil on June 2, they seized a mobile phone that indicated his involvement in drug supply. Chadwick initially claimed the packages were intended for someone else but later pleaded guilty to charges of fraudulent evasion of a ban on importing class B drugs and being concerned in the supply of class B drugs.
During the mitigation, it was mentioned that Chadwick had a long-standing addiction to cannabis and had lost his job, contributing to his criminal activities. Recorder Christian Jowett sentenced Chadwick to 14 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 150 hours of unpaid work.
The case highlighted the lengths individuals may go to in attempting to smuggle illegal substances into the country and the consequences of engaging in drug-related activities. The court’s decision to suspend Chadwick’s sentence reflects a balance between punishment and rehabilitation in such cases.
