The Met Office suggests there may be another opportunity to witness this spectacle tonight, as a “coronal mass ejection from the sun is earth bound” once again.
According to the Met Office forecast for Wales tonight, the best chance to view the Northern Lights would be earlier rather than later, as the evening progresses with clear spells and the potential for more cloud towards southeastern areas later on. The forecast indicates the possibility of seeing the lights in the UK from 7 pm on Friday evening if conditions are dark enough, possibly continuing into the early hours if the skies remain clear.
A spokesperson from the Met Office mentioned an increase in space weather events, including the Northern Lights, due to the sun approaching the peak of its solar cycle. This aligns with recent months seeing more aurora activity, following an impressive display in May. The phenomenon occurs when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, emitting light at different wavelengths and creating colourful displays in the sky.
BBC Breakfast weather presenter, Matt Taylor, noted that Thursday’s clear night facilitated optimal viewing conditions for the auroras, whereas Friday night might have more cloud cover. The Northern Lights are primarily influenced by geomagnetic storms originating from solar activity, with the sun’s 11-year cycle impacting their visibility. Increased sunspot activity can lead to aurora sightings, manifesting when Earth-directed bursts of energy, known as coronal mass ejections, interact with the atmosphere.
