King Charles is set to host a state visit at Buckingham Palace, as reported by Wales Online. The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, accompanied by his first wife Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani, will be welcomed by Charles and the Queen on December 3 in London.
During the incoming two-day state visit, the royal guests can expect to receive a traditional ceremonial welcome on Horse Guards Parade, followed by a grand state banquet at Buckingham Palace. This visit holds significance as Charles has previously visited Qatar eight times as the Prince of Wales, and had met the Emir during various events, including the Cop28 summit in Dubai and the King’s coronation.
Qatar, known as one of the wealthiest Gulf states, plays a key role in mediating international conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas war. However, the country has faced criticism for its human rights record, particularly regarding the mistreatment of migrant workers during the 2022 Fifa World Cup, as well as its stance on same-sex relationships and gender discrimination.
Sheikh Tamim, aged 44, who was educated in Britain, is a prominent figure in Qatar’s royal family. He established Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) in 2005, which owns the French football club Paris Saint-Germain. In 2022, Charles faced scrutiny after reportedly receiving donations for his charity, the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund, from a former Qatari prime minister.
The upcoming state visit is expected to include meetings with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and discussions on various diplomatic issues. Despite past controversies, the visit symbolises the ongoing diplomatic relations between the UK and Qatar, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in today’s global landscape.
