Comedian and Strictly winner Bill Bailey recently shared an intriguing anecdote about his experience in China. Bailey, 59, detailed how he purchased a caged owl from a restaurant in China and then released it into a forest. This act of kindness was recounted as part of Bailey’s newly released memoir titled “My Animals, And Other Animals,” which explores the impact animals have had on his life.
During a trip through Guangdong province in China, Bailey encountered an owl confined in a restaurant. Unclear of the bird’s fate, Bailey and his family were moved by the owl’s plight and decided to rescue it. They negotiated with the restaurant to purchase the owl, successfully liberating it from its captivity. Following advice from an owl expert at London Zoo, they released the owl in a nearby forest, witnessing its freedom with joy as it flew away.
Describing the owl as a female Eurasian eagle-owl, Bailey disclosed that he paid 400 yuan (approximately £40) for its freedom. Recognised by the Peregrine Fund for its grand size and striking appearance, the Eurasian eagle-owl is among the world’s largest owl species.
In addition to his wildlife adventures, Bailey made television history by becoming the oldest celebrity to claim the Strictly Come Dancing trophy at 55.
