A rogue trader in Merthyr Tydfil had to pay over £20,000 in fines and compensation for providing a sub-standard driveway to a customer. Elegant Driveways and Landscaping Ltd, based in Newport, was ordered to pay £5,317 in fines and costs, along with £18,200 in compensation to the affected resident. The company admitted to trading standards offences, including failing to deliver a UV resin driveway as promised, carrying out substandard work, not providing specified products, and giving inaccurate business details.
The case was brought to Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court following a complaint during the summer of 2023. The investigation revealed multiple breaches of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. Paul Lewis, head of public protection at the council, emphasized the importance of safeguarding residents from rogue traders, especially during the current cost of living crisis. He stressed that businesses providing services must adhere to trading standards laws and offer fair and honest services to customers.
Craig Rushton, the trading standards team leader, shared advice for residents, recommending obtaining multiple quotes before agreeing to work, opting for local businesses, seeking recommendations from friends and family, and taking time to review contracts thoroughly before committing. The council’s commitment to protecting consumers from unscrupulous traders was highlighted as they aim to ensure residents receive quality services.
The court’s decision serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant when engaging with tradespeople, encouraging them to seek quotes, verify the credibility of businesses, and make informed decisions before engaging with contractors.
