A young boy yelled at a thug in the street as his mother was being robbed. Ryan Shaw, 43, engaged in a conversation with a pregnant woman at a bank in Eccles town centre, Salford. The woman, who was four months pregnant, left the bank with her cash when Shaw attempted to snatch the envelope. A struggle ensued, leading to Shaw grabbing the cash and fleeing, despite the woman’s child screaming at him to stop.
Shaw was later arrested, having altered his appearance. In court, it was revealed that Shaw had 15 previous theft-related convictions. The prosecution stated that Shaw targeted the woman due to her vulnerability, knowing she was pregnant. The woman expressed shock and disbelief, questioning how someone could behave so callously towards her and her child in broad daylight.
Shaw, undergoing a relationship breakdown and alcohol abuse at the time, showed remorse for his actions. Despite this, he was sentenced to 20 months in jail and ordered to pay compensation. The judge highlighted the severity of Shaw’s actions, emphasising his deliberate targeting of a vulnerable pregnant woman.
The incident highlighted the woman’s concerns about safety in a public space and raised questions about the moral compass of offenders targeting vulnerable individuals. Shaw’s sentencing serves as a warning to those who exploit others’ vulnerabilities for personal gain.
