A man in Wales was discovered to possess disturbing videos of people engaging in sexual acts with animals and an image depicting the abuse of a young girl. James Owen, hailing from Anglesey, had these illicit images on his phone when the North Wales Police seized his devices. The images ranged from extreme pornographic videos and pictures of individuals engaging in sexual activities with animals to a graphic depiction of a girl aged between eight and ten being abused, classified as the most serious category A.
Owen, aged 30, admitted to making an indecent photograph of a child and possessing extreme pornographic content after his arrest in 2022. During a sentencing hearing at Caernarfon Crown Court, it was revealed that the videos involved a horse, a dog, and even a tortoise. Authorities stumbled upon four images and 24 videos showing interactions of people with live animals on Owen’s devices.
In court, Owen’s defence counsel highlighted that the offences were non-contact in nature and expressed Owen’s remorse and understanding of the impact of his actions on others. Despite the grim nature of the crimes, Owen was noted to pose a low risk by the judge. He received a suspended sentence of six months for 18 months, along with orders to complete unpaid work, attend rehabilitation programmes, and abide by prevention orders.
While Owen’s family and friends provided commendatory testimonials, acknowledging his sense of shame and lack of reoffending since the arrest, the judge emphasised the seriousness of the offences. Owen’s compliance with the terms of the sentence, including participation in rehabilitation activities and adherence to prevention orders, was mandated for a period of seven years.
