Doctor Who actor Ncuti Gatwa excited fans when he confirmed on The Graham Norton Show that filming for the third season of the popular TV series is underway. The 31-year-old, who took over from David Tennant as the Doctor, shared the news during the show. Gatwa mentioned, “It is all going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”
Despite the third season not being officially announced by the show, Gatwa’s involvement hints at more thrilling episodes in the pipeline. The BBC, in collaboration with Disney Plus, is behind the production of Doctor Who’s latest seasons. Executive producer, Russell T Davies, expressed his satisfaction in casting Gatwa as the Doctor. Davies shared, “Casting Ncuti meant casting him before he’d finished on ‘Sex Education’. That was a risk that we took, but it was absolutely the right risk, because it meant we got the best possible Doctor in 2024 that we could wish for.”
When asked about the future of the show with Gatwa and co-star Millie Gibson, Davies mentioned that decisions about the series’ continuation are still pending. Gatwa, known for his role in Netflix’s Sex Education, highlighted the ongoing work in shaping the upcoming season. He said, “The decision to commission Season 3 won’t be made until after Season 2 has transmitted. And that’s always been the deal since the start.”
The actor also emphasized the dedication required for the production process, mentioning the meticulous effort put into each episode. Gatwa reflected, “Hey, we might even have a day off! Although maybe not, with the whole of TWB [The War Between the Land and the Sea] to complete and the rest of Season 2 to hammer into shape. So the Great Work goes on.”
