Family left sleeping on airport floor for two nights offered ‘laughable’ compensation

A family who spent two nights sleeping on an airport floor has criticised the compensation offered by easyJet as “laughable” and “inadequate”. Following a chaotic end to their holiday in Mallorca, Lowri Gallagher, 30, along with her partner Shane Stevenson and their two young children had to book their own flights back to Leeds instead of being provided with replacement flights by easyJet. This resulted in them being stranded hundreds of miles away from their Ferndale home in Rhondda.

The ordeal began when their scheduled flight home was cancelled, and despite being rebooked for the following day, that flight was also eventually cancelled. The family had to face the challenge of finding accommodation on their own with limited guidance from the airline. Lowri highlighted the lack of assistance from easyJet staff at the airport, causing them to endure uncomfortable conditions and financial strain.

After six weeks of delays, the family finally received £240 in compensation from easyJet, initially offered as a holiday voucher. Lowri expressed dissatisfaction with the compensation, stating that it did not cover the expenses incurred during their ordeal. Despite easyJet attributing the flight disruptions to adverse weather and air traffic control issues, the family felt that the compensation offered was insufficient given the distress they experienced.

In response to the family’s concerns, an easyJet spokesperson mentioned that they had apologised directly to the family and would offer a gesture of goodwill in cash, rather than credit. The family’s frustration with the airline’s compensation package reflects a broader issue of customer satisfaction and the need for airlines to provide adequate support during unforeseen travel disruptions.

Moving forward, the family hopes for fair compensation that accurately reflects the challenges they faced and the expenses they had to cover due to the flight cancellations. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of effective communication and support from airlines in ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers.
