Midwives at Liverpool Women’s Hospital were left in disbelief when Georgia Lamey gave birth to a baby boy who they described as the biggest baby they had ever seen in their career. Initially, doctors estimated that her newborn would likely be around 10lbs, but on July 19, the scales showed an astonishing 11lbs 11oz for the baby, equivalent to the weight of a medium-sized bowling ball.
The mum-of-three, along with the baby’s father, Joe, found themselves dressing little Jonah in clothes meant for three-month-olds right from the start, as the standard newborn attire was too snug. Their first two children were also on the larger side, each weighing around 10lbs, but Jonah’s size truly took everyone by surprise at his birth. Georgia had been reassured during her scans that Jonah was hitting the perfect weight targets and was neither too large nor too small.
Georgia faced an unexpected turn of events when she gave birth to Jonah six days past her due date at the Women’s Hospital. She had planned for a home birth, but a complication with her waters being unclear necessitated a hospital delivery. Despite giving birth to Jonah naturally, the experience wasn’t as smooth as anticipated due to Jonah’s size, which caused a complication known as shoulder dystocia, where the baby’s shoulder gets stuck during birth.
Georgia shared, “When he was born, no one could believe the size of him. When he was handed to me after I’d given birth, he was that heavy I had to give him to his dad. I couldn’t physically hold him any longer!” Midwives visiting during Georgia’s hospital stay were amazed at Jonah’s size and described him as the largest baby they had seen in their career. The family had to quickly move up in clothing sizes to accommodate Jonah’s size.
Georgia remarked that Jonah, who is now 12 weeks old, has been repeatedly mistaken for an eight-month-old infant due to his size. She added, “He’s been the talk of the town. When I first got home from the hospital, I had people knocking on the door wanting to see the baby.” Georgia and Joe eagerly await confirmation on whether baby Jonah holds the record for being the largest infant delivered at the Women’s Hospital this year.
