‘A joy-rider killed my partner while I was pregnant with our son’

Gemma Yates’ life was forever changed when her partner, Callum Steadman, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident by a joyrider driving a stolen BMW on December 1, 2017. At the time, Gemma was pregnant with their first child, and the news shattered their dreams of starting a family. Callum was struck down while crossing the road in north Manchester, and the driver fled the scene, leaving Gemma devastated. Despite the immense loss, Gemma drew strength from the fact that she was carrying their baby.

Callum, who was 28 years old and the couple had been eagerly anticipating the birth of their son, had exciting plans for their future as a family. The driver responsible, Kayden Wallbank, faced legal consequences the following year. Wallbank, a convicted car thief, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, among other charges. The court heard that he was driving recklessly at three times the speed limit in the area.

Following the tragic event, Gemma, based in Droylsden, decided to embark on a new journey. She left her job at Asda after almost two decades due to scheduling conflicts and started her own business creating “permanent jewellery.” Despite the challenges of being a single mother to her three sons, Gemma launched her venture named Hello Sunshine in March this year, initially starting from a market stall in Hyde before moving to a more permanent location.

Reflecting on the impact of her loss, Gemma shared that losing Callum changed her perspective on life and motivated her to follow her dreams. She found the courage to step out on her own and embrace entrepreneurship for the betterment of herself and her children. Gemma’s strength and resilience in the face of tragedy serve as a tribute to Callum’s memory, with her determination to create a better future for herself and her family.

The story of Gemma’s journey of loss, grief, and resilience highlights the enduring spirit of overcoming adversity and finding hope in the face of tragedy. Gemma’s unwavering courage in the wake of unimaginable loss is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of love to inspire us to rise above life’s challenges.
