‘Watercooler’ moments important for work place productivity, study claims

A recent study claims that ‘watercooler’ moments play a vital role in workplace productivity. While the traditional watercooler chats might be dwindling, only one in 10 employees engage in these informal conversations at the office watercooler. However, informal discussions are now taking place in unexpected places such as the office car park (15 per cent) or lift (14 per cent), according to a survey of 2,000 workers.

Behavioural neuroscientist Dr Lynda Shaw emphasises the importance of these casual exchanges for productivity. The research, conducted by Jakemans, highlights the significance of Monday morning interactions in boosting employee morale and focus for the upcoming week. Dr Shaw explains, “After a weekend of activities, it’s helpful to switch into ‘work-mode’ on Monday morning through seemingly ‘unimportant’ discussions.”

The survey found that 64 per cent of employees prefer catching up with colleagues before starting Monday tasks, with 86 per cent believing positive relationships with co-workers are essential. More than a fifth of employees stay in touch with colleagues over the weekend, often communicating through texts, WhatsApp, or personal meetings.

Elizabeth Hughes-Gapper of Jakemans notes that relationships and conversations are crucial for boosting morale and productivity. The study discovered that employees miss office coffee breaks, casual conversations, shared lunches, and laughing with colleagues about work challenges. These interactions contribute significantly to a sense of teamwork and motivation.

Dr Shaw offers tips to maximise Mondays, such as starting with energising conversations, planning ahead, building relationships with colleagues, celebrating small wins, and changing one’s mindset towards Mondays as fresh opportunities. As remote work increases, maintaining social interactions on Mondays becomes even more essential to enhance motivation and productivity.

Interaction and communication in the workplace are vital for employees’ overall well-being and performance. Recognising the value of casual chats and nurturing positive relationships with colleagues can significantly impact workplace productivity and employee satisfaction.
