A 19-year-old Irish traveller, Zoe Lynch, who left school at 13 and is now a full-time housewife, has expressed her preference for the strict rules and traditional values she was raised with, stating she would raise her own daughter in the same manner. Zoe, who is married to Tom Delaney, 19, and resides in a caravan in Tipperary, Ireland, was brought up in a community where she learned to cook and clean from a young age, leaving formal education at 13.
In her community, there are strict guidelines women must adhere to, such as not drinking or smoking before marriage and avoiding partying holidays. Sleepovers with friends are not allowed, and women are expected to maintain a welcoming home for guests. Zoe emphasised the importance of always looking presentable, with a focus on styled hair, makeup, and tanned skin. She follows a routine of thorough cleaning daily and aims to be well-groomed for her husband and the community.
Despite these stringent rules, Zoe asserted that she intends to raise her future children in the same manner, as it is considered normal within her community. Reflecting on her marriage at 18, Zoe highlighted that marrying young is common in her community, with some individuals marrying as early as 14. She mentioned that dropping out of school at 13 is not unusual, with many foregoing formal education.
