Isolated older people ‘at health risk due to low levels of key nutrients’

Isolated older people are at an increased health risk due to low levels of key nutrients, according to a recent study. Researchers found that older individuals who live alone or are socially isolated are more likely to have deficiencies in vital nutrients such as vitamins C and B6, folate, potassium, and magnesium. The research, conducted on nearly 4,000 UK adults aged 50 and over, revealed that those living in isolation had lower-than-recommended levels of these essential minerals.

The insufficient intake of these five crucial nutrients is linked to a higher risk of heart issues, cognitive decline, and issues with bone and skin health, as highlighted by scientists from University College London (UCL). Professor Andrew Steptoe from UCL’s Behavioural Science & Health emphasised the significance of this study, stating that socially isolated individuals were less likely to consume sufficient micronutrients through their diet. He added that inadequate intake of these micronutrients can increase health problems as people age.

The findings indicated that isolated older people may not be incorporating enough of these nutrients into their diet from sources like fruits, nuts, vegetables, fish, seeds, and legumes. The study, published in the journal Age and Ageing, analysed data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing involving 3,713 participants. Participants reported their dietary habits and social interactions, revealing that higher social isolation scores were associated with lower intake of the key micronutrients.

Interestingly, while loneliness was not connected to lower levels of these nutrients, practical consequences of limited social connections were apparent. Deficiencies in nutrients like calcium, iron, and vitamin B12, mainly found in meat, eggs, and dairy, were not linked to social isolation. The researchers suggested that promoting a varied diet rich in plant-based foods and fish is crucial to maintaining overall health, especially for elderly individuals living alone or in isolation.

Ultimately, the study underscores the importance of addressing the nutritional needs of isolated older people to mitigate potential health risks associated with nutrient deficiencies. By encouraging a diverse and balanced diet rich in essential micronutrients, individuals can better support their overall well-being as they age.
