91 families stand united to honour special babies and grieving families

In a heartwarming display of unity, 91 families impacted by baby loss gathered on a football pitch to show support for newly bereaved families. The event, organised by Sands United Brighton & Hove, a team of bereaved fathers, aimed to provide comfort and compassion to those experiencing the loss of a baby. Known as the 91 Letters Initiative, this gathering sought to honour the 91 babies who are stillborn or pass shortly after birth each week in the UK.

Parents, friends, and families affected by baby loss took the time to write letters offering hope and reassurance to those facing the early stages of grief. These messages of support will be shared with grieving families through hospital networks and the Sands charity during Baby Loss Awareness Week. It’s revealed that half of UK adults have either experienced or know someone who has faced pregnancy or baby loss, highlighting the importance of a supportive community during times of grief.

Organiser Will Bower, reflecting on his own loss, expressed the significance of reaching out to offer support to families navigating this devastating experience. He mentions the loneliness felt before finding support and hopes these letters convey a message of solidarity to those going through similar pain. The Director of Bereavement Support and Volunteering at Sands, Jen Coates, emphasised the importance of understanding and connection for grieving families, as pregnancy and baby loss can often lead to feelings of isolation.

Following this powerful display of solidarity, Baby Loss Awareness Week concluded with a moving tribute where candles were lit for children lost too soon during the global Wave of Light. Despite the heartbreaking nature of the event, it served as a meaningful way to honour the memory of these children and demonstrate the strength found in coming together as a community during times of grief.

The participants, including organisers like Andy Lindley and Stuart Tingley, shared their own experiences through heartfelt letters, offering comfort and empathy to those who may feel alone in their sorrow. By standing together and supporting one another, these families aim to show that no one has to face such loss by themselves. The initiative not only serves as a source of comfort but also as a beacon of hope for families grappling with the profound sadness of losing a child.

As the week came to an end, the collective remembrance continued, with many individuals joining online to share in a moment of connection and remembrance. Despite the sorrow that comes with such loss, the shared experience and support found within the community provide solace and strength for those in need.
