A man named Andrew Taylor, also known as Andrew Bourke, has been sentenced to two years in prison after he carried out a random and violent attack on a stranger in the middle of a busy high street in Monmouthshire. The incident took place on Monnow Street in Monmouth at around 4.30pm on Monday, August 12. Taylor struck the victim, who was unknown to him, on the back of the head with a metal bar. He appeared at Newport Crown Court on Wednesday, October 16, where he pleaded guilty to charges of affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), possession of a bladed article in a public place, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
Detective Constable Sophie Giles, the officer handling the case, described the attack as a cause of great alarm, not only for the victim and those who knew him but also for bystanders going about their daily business. She highlighted that the victim was fortunate not to have sustained more serious injuries due to Taylor’s actions. Despite Taylor’s claims of acting in self-defence, evidence from numerous witnesses supported the investigation, leading to his conviction. Giles emphasised the importance of the witnesses in bringing this dangerous and violent individual to justice.
