A man in Wales punched a pub customer unconscious before calling him a “snitch” and later turning up at his house with others, a court has heard. The victim suffered injuries, including bruising and bleeding on the brain, resulting in a seizure while in hospital. The incident took place at a bar in Swansea, where 23-year-old Jahir Ali launched the assault while intoxicated.
During sentencing at Swansea Crown Court, the judge emphasised the serious nature of witness intimidation, stating it typically leads to immediate imprisonment. Despite this, the judge opted for a community-based punishment and rehabilitation for Ali. The victim, who was celebrating a birthday with a friend at a bar, was attacked by Ali after a scuffle ensued.
Following the assault, the victim was hospitalised with brain injuries, necessitating monitoring and ongoing care. Ali, who had no prior convictions, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and witness intimidation. His sentence of 16 months in prison was suspended for 18 months, with additional requirements including a rehabilitation course, unpaid community work, and a nightly curfew.
Ali’s defence highlighted his remorse for the consequences of his actions and described him as a hard-working individual. The judge urged Ali to reflect on the impact of alcohol and substances on his behaviour. Despite the severity of the assault and intimidation, the judge decided on a suspended sentence to allow for rehabilitation within the community.
The judge’s decision took into account Ali’s guilty pleas and imposed conditions to ensure his accountability and integration back into society.
