A doctor has raised concerns about the latest Covid variant, known as Covid XEC, highlighting its severe impact on daily functioning. Dr Snieguole Geige from the ‘It’s Me and You Clinic’ warned that persistent fatigue is the most common symptom observed in patients affected by this variant. She emphasised that the fatigue tends to linger longer compared to previous variants. Additionally, there is a risk of sudden, acute respiratory failure in individuals who previously experienced milder symptoms.
Experts are increasingly worried about the unpredictable trajectory of XEC, with patients at risk of deteriorating rapidly due to lung complications leading to oxygen deprivation. While Dr Geige sounded the alarm on the dangers posed by XEC, other experts like Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal from the United Kingdom Health Security Agency have urged for calm, stating that current information does not indicate heightened concern about this variant but close monitoring is ongoing.
The order of symptoms for XEC has drawn interest among clinicians, typically beginning with a fever, followed by a cough, sore throat, muscle pain or headache, and possibly nausea or vomiting and diarrhoea. This unique progression helps doctors differentiate Covid-19 from other illnesses, aiding in prompt treatment decisions.
The XEC variant is reported to manifest symptoms resembling a common cold or flu, including a high temperature, aches, cough, and sore throat. The NHS has specified three groups eligible for a Covid booster vaccine, prioritising those over 65, individuals aged 6 months to 64 years with health conditions making them more susceptible, and frontline NHS and social care workers, including those in care homes for older people.
As Covid XEC continues to spread, vigilance and caution are paramount to mitigate its impact on public health. Stay informed and follow guidelines to protect yourself and others from the evolving challenges posed by this new variant.
