A family in Bristol, England, has been forced to live in a Travelodge after a fire broke out in their flat, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Dionne Barnes and her two children, Toure, 16, and Mihema-Re, 10, had their lives turned upside down when a toaster explosion sparked a blaze in their home on September 28.
The incident began at around 3pm when Toure attempted to make some toast, only for the appliance to start sparking and emit a loud bang. Dionne received a frantic call from her son, alerting her to the fire engulfing their flat in the 16-storey Croydon House in Easton. By the time she arrived, the flames were too intense to salvage any of their possessions.
Fortunately, nobody was injured in the fire, but the family lost everything in the blaze. Now, they find themselves staying at a Travelodge in Emersons Green, awaiting temporary housing arranged by Bristol City Council. A GoFundMe campaign launched by a friend has raised nearly £4,000 to support the family during this challenging time.
Dionne expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received, acknowledging the emotional toll of the experience. She described the devastation of returning to see their flat completely destroyed, unable to even enter without feeling overwhelmed by sadness. The family’s temporary accommodation is set to last until at least November 14, with uncertainties about their next steps.
Despite the hardships they face, Dionne remains optimistic, appreciative of the kindness shown by strangers. She highlighted the difficulties of being displaced from their home and how the community’s generosity has provided a glimmer of hope for rebuilding their lives. With the help of emergency services and the council, the family is navigating this challenging period and looking towards a brighter future.
