A crucial decision regarding the development of a new hydrogen energy facility in the Bridgend area has been postponed, as reported by Wales Online. Members of Bridgend County Borough Council were expected to make a decision on the Hybont hydrogen project during a special meeting scheduled for October 17. The project, proposed by developer Marubeni Europower Ltd, aims to construct a hydrogen production facility at the Brynmenyn Industrial Estate, along with plans for hydrogen storage, electrolysers, a hydrogen refuelling station, and a solar farm across Bryncethin and Brynmenyn sites.
However, the meeting was delayed after the council received additional information on the plans from a statutory consultee. A council spokesman stated that the new information needs to be assessed to evaluate its impact on the planning application, allowing time for the applicant to respond. The council will announce a new date for the rescheduled meeting in the future.
The proposed project has faced significant opposition from local residents and businesses, with objections based on safety concerns and the facility’s proximity to residential areas in the village of Bryncethin. Previous protests and objections led to the Welsh Government issuing a “holding direction,” preventing the council from approving the plans without further review.
The council report, recommending approval with conditions, highlighted a significant level of objection from the public, with over 250 letters received from residents and businesses in the Bryncethin, Brynmenyn, and Sarn areas. The planned special meeting would have included a site visit and representations from the applicant, objectors, and local councillors.
