The Met Office has issued warnings of potential dangers to life as Storm Ashley is set to bring 80mph winds to parts of the UK over the weekend. The first named storm of the season is expected to hit north-west Scotland on Sunday, with an amber weather warning in place for the region. The warnings are set to take effect from Sunday morning through to midnight, with the potential for gusts of 80mph in north-west Scotland.
The Met Office has highlighted the risk of injuries and danger to life due to large waves and beach material being thrown on coastal roads and properties. Power cuts are also likely, which could impact mobile phone coverage. Buildings may suffer damage, such as tiles being blown off roofs. Disruption to road, rail, air, and ferry services is anticipated, along with road and bridge closures.
Meteorologist Aidan McGivern explained that Storm Ashley is expected to deepen rapidly and bring widespread gales and wind gusts exceeding 60mph to many western and northern parts of the country. The weather is set to deteriorate on Sunday, with thickening clouds, strengthening winds, and heavy rain hitting Northern Ireland and western UK. Wind speeds could reach 50-60mph in western parts, particularly affecting exposed coasts and hills.
The strongest winds are forecasted to sweep exposed areas of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with gusts of up to 80mph expected. Mr. McGivern cautioned that such wind gusts could cause significant disruptions and damage to buildings. Coastal communities are at risk of flooding due to the high tides coinciding with the strong winds. The weather is expected to peak on Sunday evening before clearing on Monday.
Transport Scotland has warned of possible disruptions to public transport, including ferries. Families travelling during the October school holidays have been advised to check for cancellations and stay updated on the changing weather conditions. The safety of residents and travellers is a top priority as the storm approaches, with authorities urging caution and preparedness in light of the severe weather warnings.
