The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) launched the campaign on Thursday, which has seen support from various individuals, including the Prince and Princess of Wales. Millions in Gaza, Lebanon, and surrounding regions are in urgent need of food, shelter, and medical assistance after being displaced from their homes in search of safety.
The DEC expressed gratitude for the donations from Britons, corporate partners, and supporters, surpassing the £11 million mark by Saturday. DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed emphasised the significant impact of every donation during this critical time of immense need. The appeal aims to provide coordinated assistance to those most affected in Gaza, Lebanon, and the wider region, with DEC member charities offering essential support such as food, water, shelter, and medicine.
Madara Hettiarachchi from the DEC highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, where destroyed crops have severely limited access to fresh food, leading to rising prices. With winter approaching, the need for assistance is growing, and more funds are urgently required to prevent famine. The UK Government is matching public donations pound for pound up to £10 million, ensuring a stronger collective response.
