Cardiff has released its overall GCSE grades from maintained schools in the city. Results at the gold standard A*-C grades are above the Welsh average with more than one in four results achieving the very top A*-A grades, but the overall pass rate is slightly lower than the average for Wales. The results follow last week’s better than Wales average for Cardiff’s A level grades. More than one in five GCSE results in the city were the top A*-A grades. This year marked the first time exams were conducted under pre-Covid conditions, after traditional exams were disrupted by the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and followed by teacher-assessed grades in 2022 and 2023.
The key statistics for Cardiff’s GCSE results are as follows:
– A*-A: 26% compared to the Wales figure of 19.2%
– A*-C: 67.4% compared to the Wales figure of 62.2%
– A*-G: 96.1% compared to 96.6% across Wales.
In a similar trend across Wales, outcomes are higher than in 2019 but lower than in 2023 when additional measures were implemented to help students cope with the disruption caused by Covid, as stated by Cardiff Council.
Cllr Sarah Merry, Cardiff Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for education, commended all of Cardiff’s pupils on their GCSE results. She acknowledged the students’ resilience and determination, highlighting their achievements as a testament to their hard work. Merry expressed best wishes to those embarking on the next chapter of their lives, whether pursuing university, employment, or training. She also lauded the city’s schools, teachers, and staff for their dedication in supporting students and preparing them for the future.
The councilor noted the continued improvement in performance across Cardiff, particularly the significantly higher than average A*-A grades. She concluded by thanking the educational community for their efforts in helping students reach their potential.
