Surge in men getting one plastic surgery operation, consultant says

A consultant in Wales has observed a significant increase in men opting for plastic surgery procedures. Mr. Ramachandran Prasad, a Consultant Breast Oncoplastic and Aesthetic Surgeon at Pall Mall Medical, highlights a growing trend of men seeking surgery to reduce and reshape their chests. This procedure, known medically as gynecomastia surgery or reduction mammaplasty for gynecomastia, aims to reduce the size of male breasts typically caused by an excess of breast tissue.

Mr. Prasad emphasises the rising demand for chest enhancements among men, ranging from reducing fatty tissues to contouring surgery. The need for male chest reduction is assessed through a thorough examination to tailor the surgical approach to individual needs. The surgeon explains that while some cases can be resolved with liposuction for excess fat, others may require surgical removal of extra breast tissue. In instances where both fat and breast tissue need addressing, a comprehensive treatment plan is devised to achieve optimal outcomes.

Although implants were once an option for enhancing pectorals, they are less common in the UK. Instead, there is a growing preference among male patients for chest reductions. Search queries for ‘chest reduction’ in the UK have surged by 33% from 2019 to 2024, with searches for ‘pec contouring’ also increasing by 26%.

Mr. Prasad notes that men are becoming increasingly body-conscious and receptive to surgical enhancements, particularly with advancements in techniques that minimise scarring. Male individuals are leaning towards procedures that utilise their own biology to achieve desired aesthetics, moving away from the artificial appearance often associated with implants. The shift towards natural-looking results is reflecting a broader acceptance of cosmetic surgery among males.
