A Cardiff woman who was left disabled after a knee operation gone wrong is now set to compete in the Paralympics just over two years after starting parasport. Funmi Oduwaiye, a 21-year-old from Cardiff, will be participating in the shotput and discus events. Four years ago, Funmi’s dreams of pursuing basketball were shattered due to complications from a routine knee operation.
Despite the setbacks, Funmi found solace in sports and was introduced to parasport by the late Anthony Hughes MBE, a Welsh disability sport icon. Initially hesitant about her potential in shotput, Funmi has since excelled in the sport, achieving impressive results at world championships. Supported by National Lottery funding, Funmi accredits her journey to the upcoming Paralympics to the opportunities provided by the programme.
