Bridgend Council has approved a budget of £1.1 million for the replacement and refurbishment of waste vehicles in the county borough. This decision will involve acquiring five new waste vehicles and refurbishing an additional three, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the council’s waste and recycling fleet. The initiative is part of a strategic plan to ensure that the waste management service operates at optimal levels.
The move follows a recent transition of waste service providers from Kier Group to Plan B Management Solutions Ltd on an interim basis. An additional funding of around £146,000 has been earmarked to cover increased costs due to delays in placing orders for the new vehicles. The decision to allocate funds for the new vehicles comes after a report by the Welsh Local Government Association ranked Bridgend as the lowest costing provider for waste services in Wales.
Despite the positive ranking, the council has faced challenges, including missed collections and operational issues at community recycling centres. The new vehicles are expected to replace aging ones and contribute to the ongoing efficiency of the waste service. Councillor Paul Davies, the cabinet member for communities, highlighted the importance of ensuring the fleet operates optimally with the introduction of newer vehicles.
The approval for the vehicle procurement is subject to the authority’s capital spending plans for 2024-25, totalling £82 million. An amendment reduced the cost allocated for marking the vehicles with council signage to save money. The decision to invest in new waste vehicles reflects the council’s commitment to maintaining a reliable waste management service for the residents of Bridgend.
