The stunning Welsh beach of Shell Island, known as Mochras in Welsh, is a paradise for beach enthusiasts and dolphin spotters. Situated on the edge of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) and overlooking Cardigan Bay, this 450-acre campsite attracts over 100,000 visitors annually.
Despite being hit by stormy weather leading up to the August Bank Holiday weekend, Shell Island remains a popular destination. The recent storms caused 70% of visitors to pack up and leave prematurely, as reported by Richard Workman, one of the campsite’s directors. However, those who persevere are rewarded with beautiful beaches and sweeping sand dunes that stretch six miles to Barmouth, offering a unique experience of surfing down the dunes with sledges.
While the main beach can get crowded, Shell Island also boasts quieter spots, including two smaller picturesque beaches that provide a calm retreat. Renowned for its stunning sunsets and views of the Llyn Peninsula and Harlech Castle, the area is a haven for stargazers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Visitors can enjoy the sight of various marine wildlife, including dolphins and porpoises often spotted in the nearby waters. To ensure safety, the campsite has invested in a radio-controlled robot lifeguard named Emily. This device aids in water rescues by speeding through water at 20mph with an 800ft rescue line.
Shell Island offers a unique camping experience, allowing visitors to choose their own pitch among fields, dunes, and trees. The amenities include an on-site cafe, shops, laundry facilities, and a pub, along with entertainment options like sports rooms and an outdoor play area for children. The campsite strictly enforces rules such as only allowing raised BBQs and maintaining an 11 pm curfew.
Open from April to October, Shell Island offers nightly rates for adults at £12 and children under 16 for £6.25 during peak season. Additional charges apply for dogs, while concessions are available for seniors. The campsite welcomes campervans and motorhomes but does not provide electric hook-ups.
