Two roads in the centre of a Welsh town are set to close for almost two months, causing disruption for drivers. The closure will affect Cowell Street and Stepney Street in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, starting from Tuesday, August 27. These roads house various businesses, including a Wetherspoons pub and several independent shops. One end of Llanelli Market connects to Cowell Street, which then leads onto partially pedestrianised Stepney Street.
Carmarthenshire Council has deemed the roadworks as essential and has engaged with local businesses in the area. Alternative parking options are available at Murray Street Car Park and other nearby streets during the closure. While vehicles will not have access to Cowell Street and the western section of Stepney Street, pedestrians will still be able to reach businesses along these routes.
The roadworks are expected to span most of September and October, with a total closure period of seven weeks. Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, culture, leisure, and tourism, stated that the works are part of the Tackling Towns program and urged the public to be patient during this necessary process.
Businesses and residents in Llanelli are advised to plan for the road closures and utilize the provided alternative parking areas. The council’s proactive approach aims to improve the town centre infrastructure and create a more efficient and pleasant environment for visitors and locals alike.
