Woman almost lost foot after bike crash in Bali while wearing flipflops

A woman from the UK, Angel Willows, 28, had a horrifying experience when she almost lost her foot in a bike crash in Bali. The incident occurred while she was riding a moped in flipflops, and her foot was impaled by a metal moped side stand during the crash. The crash happened after hitting a pothole, causing Angel and her cousin, who was riding with her, to fall on the concrete road with the weight of the scooter and cousin on top of her.

Angel was rushed to a nearby hospital in extreme pain. However, she claims that her cousin, who is a nurse, had to instruct the hospital staff on the proper care her wound required before being stitched up. Following inadequate stitching at the initial hospital, Angel’s foot continued to bleed heavily and changed colour. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, her cousin suggested seeking medical treatment in Australia, where they were still on visa.

After arriving in Sydney, Australia, three days post-accident, doctors informed Angel that her foot was severely infected due to the poor stitching. She underwent three wash-out surgeries to clean the wound, but it continued to deteriorate, prompting a skin flap surgery where skin tissue from her groin was used to repair her foot. Angel spent a month in the hospital before being discharged and is currently recuperating in Australia.

Reflecting on the incident, Angel expressed her gratitude for avoiding losing her foot but admitted to underestimating the severity of her injuries initially. She emphasised the importance of wearing appropriate footwear, vowing to only wear trainers while riding bikes in the future, instead of flipflops. Despite the challenging recovery process, Angel remains positive and views the unique scar on her foot as part of her story.

The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of safety precautions, including proper footwear, while engaging in outdoor activities such as riding bikes. Angel’s experience highlights the potential risks and consequences of neglecting safety measures, underscoring the need for vigilance and preparedness when participating in such activities.
