However, Go.Compare car insurance has found that almost a quarter of drivers are unsure of how number plates work and what the different letters and numbers signify. The standard UK registration format consists of two letters and two numbers followed by three letters. The first two letters denote the vehicle’s registration location, while the third and fourth digits represent the car’s age identifier.
For example, the number plate CA24 ABC indicates a vehicle registered in Cardiff in March 2024. The survey also revealed that over a third of drivers do not understand the meaning of the letters, and 29% are uncertain about the numerical digits on a number plate.
Tom Banks, a car insurance spokesperson for Go.Compare, emphasised the importance of knowing the information on your number plate, particularly when purchasing a second-hand car. He highlighted the significance of adhering to rules and regulations regarding number plate colour, size, spacing, and font to avoid fines.
In addition to decoding number plates, Go.Compare has outlined legal requirements for number plates. These include being reflective, displaying specific characters on coloured backgrounds, and ensuring specified character dimensions and spacings. Failure to comply can result in a £1,000 fine and a failed MOT test.
