A 27-year-old woman, Hollie Marie, has revealed that tap water in Bali caused her 30-inch hair to fall out, leaving her feeling ‘ugly’ and housebound for two months. Hollie, who was visiting the island with friends in 2021, initially noticed her hair thinning without understanding the cause. Over time, she lost the majority of her long blonde hair as it became matted and fell out in chunks whenever she brushed it.
Hollie resorted to wearing wigs to conceal the hair loss until she eventually shaved her head completely. Distraught by her experience, she attributed the hair loss to stress, the sun, or alopecia until a hairdresser in Bali pointed out the poor quality of the tap water as the culprit. Concerned for other tourists facing similar issues, Hollie established a shower filter business to prevent others from undergoing the same distressing ordeal.
Documenting her hair journey on TikTok, Hollie’s video went viral, attracting over 786,800 views. She recounted the horrifying experience of her hair matting and falling out in large clumps, leading to the drastic decision to shave her head on Christmas Eve in 2021. Feeling ‘ugly’ and self-conscious, Hollie struggled with her appearance and avoided social activities for months.
Realising the impact of the water quality on her hair too late, Hollie regrets not addressing the issue sooner. Developing her shower filter business to protect hair from hard water, she now emphasises the importance of using filters, especially for travelers spending extended periods in areas with poor water quality.
