Loner Lived Knee-Deep in Filth and Abused a Child Through His Computer
Lee Sandeman, 39, of Ebbw Vale, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison after grooming and abusing a 15-year-old girl in Canada. Sandeman coerced his teenage victim to perform sexual acts over the internet, taking images of her while she was naked and engaging in sexual activity. The Cardiff Crown Court heard that Sandeman used the name “Raven Knight” on the Discord messaging platform to contact the victim in 2019. He groomed her over several months, gaining her trust and confidence, before coercing her into explicit sexual activities on camera.
When the victim contacted police in Canada in 2021, she described how Sandeman’s conversations with her became increasingly inappropriate, with him sending explicit images and instructions for sexual acts over webcam. A search of Sandeman’s home in Ebbw Vale revealed hundreds of indecent images of children on his computer. The images included explicit content of children as young as nine years old being abused by adults.
Despite having previous good character, Sandeman pleaded guilty to causing/inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual communication with a child, making indecent images, and possession of extreme images. In mitigation, his lawyer stated that Sandeman had been living a virtual life, isolated in a filthy room at his mother’s home. The court was told that his living space was described as a “hovel,” filled with rubbish, empty alcohol bottles, and a dirty sofa.
During sentencing, Judge Lucy Crowther highlighted Sandeman’s fixation on sexual matters and his detachment from reality. She noted that his life revolved around drinking wine, smoking cannabis, playing online games, and watching pornography. Sandeman was ordered to serve half of his 32-month sentence in custody, with the remainder to be served on licence. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender indefinitely and will be subject to a restraining order and Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
