Neath Port Talbot Council has made plans to repurpose a community centre in Pontardawe, as the lease and operating agreement for the Cross Community Enterprise Centre were returned to the local authority. A meeting held on August 7 saw members agreeing to initiate the search for a new purpose for the centre, situated at the core of Pontardawe town centre. The site, at the junction of Herbert Street and High Street, has been a hub for the community and local businesses for several years.
The three-floor building was previously leased to an independent operator in 2015. However, in 2023, it became apparent that the operator could no longer continue, leading to the surrender of the lease. Council officers have been assisting tenants in finding suitable alternative accommodation during this transition period. Although the centre has been closed for health and safety reasons, arrangements have been made for all occupants to relocate while discussions on its future progress.
Neath Port Talbot Council published a report indicating that the costs of refurbishing the premises to its previous standard could exceed £500,000. Concerns were raised by members of a scrutiny committee about the void left by the closure of a key community space within the town. The meeting coincided with efforts by local residents to raise funds for another community facility, the former Mamas Paradise nightclub, which is reportedly up for sale at auction for £250,000.
