‘I ditched processed food and lost 17st to save my sister’s life’

A heartwarming tale of sacrifice and determination has emerged as a loving brother shed almost 17 stone to be eligible to help save his sister’s life. Matthew Flanagan, 24, from Wales, embarked on a remarkable weight loss journey after being told he wasn’t a suitable kidney donor match for his sister Emma, who was diagnosed with kidney failure.

Weighing over 31 stone as a teenager and surviving on a diet of processed, high-sugar foods, Matthew realized the need to make significant changes for his health and his sister’s well-being. Determined to be part of a kidney sharing scheme that could increase Emma’s chances of finding a match, Matthew set out to lose weight by joining Slimming World and overcame the odds by shedding an impressive 16 stone and 9 pounds.

Now boasting a trim 14 stone 8 pounds figure, Matthew not only achieved eligibility for the donation scheme but also fulfilled a dream of owning a vintage Mini Cooper, which he previously couldn’t fit into. His dedication earned him the title of Slimming World’s Man of the Year.

Reflecting on his journey, Matthew expressed gratitude for the motivation provided by his sister’s health situation, which gave him the drive to make positive changes. His weight loss enabled him to participate in the donation scheme, increasing Emma’s chance of receiving a much-needed kidney. Matthew’s transformation also led him to new experiences like hiking and finding love, demonstrating a profound shift in his lifestyle and confidence.

As he eagerly anticipates being a kidney donor later in the year, Matthew looks back on his progress with pride, recognizing the impact his efforts have had on both his and his sister’s lives. A testament to the power of determination and selflessness, Matthew’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength of familial love and the rewards of perseverance in the face of adversity.
